Winter Luxuries for Your Custom Home
As temperatures fall, there’s nothing more comforting than grabbing your favorite blanket and bundling up on your couch. There are a few winter features you can add to your home to make it even more luxurious in the winter. Choose to include one or all in your upcoming custom home build for added luxury to you home.
Heated Floors
Regardless of how well heated your home is, bathroom floors can still hold in the cold and be frigid on your feet. Installing radiant heat coils under the floor can combat cold floors and leave your feet toasty warm. This upgrade is popular in master bathrooms. Temperatures can be pre-set so your bathroom floor is warm first thing in the morning. Floor type will determine if you can install heated coils. Tile and stone are likely yes, but for rubber and concrete floors heated coils are not an option. Hardwood or manufactured wood floors are a possibility, but not optimal for heated coil installation.
Upscale Mudroom
A custom luxury home’s mudroom can include more than a corner where you take off your shoes. To upgrade this area for winter (or even rainy spring) season, you will want to include hooks for hats, closets for bulky coats, shelves for backpacks and bags, wet umbrella stands, cubbies for purses and personal items and a bench. Plastic storage bins are also great for collecting gloves, scarves and hats. Other upgrades to a mudroom include sink with cleaning supplies, dog-washing station, mats and floor drains for muddy boots or other wet gear and a family communication center with a bulletin board or white board.
If your kids are active in sports, you may also want to include a rack for equipment in your mudroom or garage. When customizing your mudroom, remember to keep in mind its purpose: to provide a functional and attractive transition space from outside to inside.
Enclosed Patio
You shouldn’t enjoy your patio only during the warm months. There are several options you can include in your custom home build to be able to enjoy your patio year-round. Custom-fitted panels that surround your patio can keep out wind, snow and sleet during the winter and wind and rain in the spring. Panels come in a variety of options that include transparency to let in light and allow you to enjoy the outside view. Many enclosures are sturdy enough for brisk winter weather, but also easy to hide when they are not in use. Depending on your budget, patio enclosures can be motorized or manual lowering and raising. These enclosures can make your home more comfortable and functional for your use regardless of the season.
Fireplaces
It’s hard to beat the pleasure of cuddling up next to a crackling wood fire. A traditional fireplace in any room (or multiple rooms) can be a go-to comfort. This option can also help keep energy costs down in your home. If you really want to amp up the luxury, consider a fireplace in a shared wall, allowing two different rooms to share the same fire. If you don’t enjoy the hassle of building and cleaning up a wood burning fire, look at installing a gas insert or an electric fireplace for a warm fire with a simple turn of a key or push of a button.
